Merry Christmas…a Little Late!

By Melissa · Comments (7) ·: December 25th, 2012

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas! Sorry that this is so late, I had a few remote blogging issues and thought that this had posted. Anyhow, we enjoyed a beautiful white Christmas (our first one!) here in Montreal. Keenan and his cousin were so excited to see what Santa brought them in the morning, that they weren’t too concerned with anything else they received!

We had a lovely brunch of chocolate croissants (thanks to my sister-in-law!), eggs and fruit with eggnog lattes! It was a delicious treat!

For Christmas dinner, we had a special meal of steak and fried potatoes (thanks to my mom!) with artichoke torta, a family tradition my Grandma Rose (my mom’s mom) would make every Christmas Eve. It was delish!

Well, I just wanted to do a quick post since I have been MIA while we have been at my brother and sister-in-laws’ house. I look forward to posting a recap of our trip when we get back this week (keeping my fingers crossed that we can fly home tomorrow, since our flight on Thursday was cancelled due to the weather).

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a very happy New Year!

Questions: How was your Christmas? What special goodies did you eat?

Traveling For the Holidays and Sacramento Bloggers December Meetup

By Melissa · Comments (5) ·: December 18th, 2012

“Peanut” was hiding this morning, sitting at the head of of our table. It took Keenan a long time to finally find her. He kept looking on the couch, around his play area and standing on his tip-toes to see if she was on the kitchen counter, before he saw her on the chair. It was too funny!

Sitting at the table!

Well, today started out better than yesterday. After we got done with CrossFit, we took him to get a hair cut and he did really well. I told him if was a big boy and didn’t cry, he could have some hot cocoa after his lunch. Once we got home, I brought him to the bathroom to go potty and change his diaper and he had a complete meltdown (crying, say ‘no!’ and screaming). Since he was so upset, I told him he didn’t have to go potty, but we still needed to change his diaper. He still didn’t settle down, and continued to scream, so he went into time out. As he continued to scream, he sat there longer and longer. Finally, once he settled down, we sat down for lunch and it was a little bit of last night all over, again (not wanting to eat, etc). After another time out, he finally calmed down and started eating, though it was a struggle. Before his nap, we read a story and when I went to put him down in his crib, he was upset again, not wanting to go to bed. He didn’t want to give me a hug or kiss, and he even lightly hit me, so I put him in his crib without being tucked in and said goodnight. He probably cried for at least 20 minutes, before he fell asleep. It was heart-wrenching. I just want to figure this out. Is this what everyone says is the “terrible twos?” If so, it is definitely terrible! I hate seeing Keenan so upset, in fact, it makes me sick to my stomach. Ugh…I hope this behavior passes soon!

Before I forget, I’ve been meaning to post a picture of the finished products of homemade Christmas gifts that we gave to our friends this year! Everything turned out well!

Also, I’ve been meaning to post about the Sacramento Bloggers December Meetup at Reunion Night Club in El Dorado Hills that I attended last Thursday. It was the first time that I attended one of their meetups, and it was a lot of fun (thanks to Giselle for introducing me to the group)! It was great meeting other local bloggers and learning about their blogs and how long they have been blogging. I always learn something new when I talk to other bloggers! I can’t wait to attend the next event and see everyone, again!

The group!

In addition, Reunion was a cool place! It is a club geared towards 30-50 year-olds and designed kind of like a club in Vegas, because you can rent out a booth, have bottle or VIP service. The nice thing about the club is they don’t have a cover charge (except for Thursdays after 8:30 p.m.) and if you come between 6-9 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, you can pay $6.00 and have dinner (all you can eat), as well as dessert. The food was quite good, too! They also feature live entertainment, such as local bands, dueling piano show (which was going on when we were there!) and more. It is definitely a great place to go for a date night or a night with friends. The manager at Reunion also said that they own Dive Bar in Sacramento, Shaboom in Walnut Creek, Ruby Sky in San Francisco and one coming soon in Vegas. All clubs are run the same and are geared toward the same age group. I can’t wait to take my husband and friends there…we are thinking it would be a fun outing for New Years!

Booths to rent.

We are leaving bright and early tomorrow morning (5:45 a.m., yuck!), I need to get some laundry done and finish packing before Keenan wakes up. We are going to do our family Christmas with Keenan as soon as gets up from his nap. Santa came early, since he knows we are leaving tomorrow and won’t be home for Christmas. He will also make a stop at my brother- and sister-in-law’s house on Christmas day, but only delivering a few things that can easily be packed in our suitcases!

It will be nice to spend some quality family time and have a chance to relax. We all can use a little vacation. I just hope Keenan’s behavior doesn’t continue in Montreal (or on the plane tomorrow!). His backpack is loaded with toys, coloring stuff and my phone has plenty of “Elmo,” “Timmy Time,” and “Shaun the Sheep” episodes, so hopefully everything will go well.

Since we will be gone for the next ten days and I won’t always have access to the internet, I will be “kinda’-MIA”. I will try to post when I can, but once we are back home, I’ll be sure to post a recap of our trip and holiday festivities. I’m looking forward to enjoying family, the wonderful holiday season, taking time to truly “unplug”, and relax. I’m still hoping to get in a few WODs, even though it is going to be snowing and SO cold! I’m thinking of doing a lot of gymnastics movements and double-unders every other day while we are there, to not lose my conditioning and also to burn some calories (since I’m sure we will be eating lots of good food!).

Happy Holidays!

Questions: What are your plans for the holidays? Are you traveling this year or hosting? Do you have any family traditions, such as baking cookies or making a certain dish? Our tradition on Christmas Eve or a couple of days before is making gingerbread men and decorating them, so I can’t wait to do that with Keenan and my niece!

A Not-So-Marvelous Monday

By Melissa · Comments (4) ·: December 18th, 2012

Well, today was probably one of the worst days, as far as “bad mommy” moments goes. Keenan finally started feeling better Saturday evening and didn’t have a fever anymore, but last night and today were rough, to say the least! We went to Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas yesterday, and Keenan didn’t fall asleep in the car like we had hoped, so he was very cranky in the evening, not wanting to eat (spitting out his food, when he did take a bite), crying, screaming, etc. We put him in timeout twice, but after the bad behavior continued, I took him upstairs for a quick bath and bed without dinner (not a great moment in my book). After his bath, he kept asking for dinner and saying he was hungry, so we went downstairs and he calmly ate his dinner.

Today, he woke up his happy and cheerful self, but a little while after breakfast, while I was cleaning house, he started acting the way he did last night…wanting something, then not wanting it, crying, screaming if he didn’t get something and throwing his toys. I put him in 3 timeouts (each one longer!) and still his behavior continued. At lunch time, he didn’t want to eat anything and was spitting out his food, as he did last night. Dinner tonight was a replay of last night…wanting food, then not wanting it, spitting it out, screaming when we tried to help him eat, etc. After multiple timeouts, he went straight to bed without dinner (with the understanding that he will have to eat his dinner for lunch tomorrow). It was awful! I still feel bad for putting him to bed without his dinner and no story. He loves stories, as that is a part of our nightly bedtime routine and I know he had to be hungry, since he didn’t have much for lunch and only had a little afternoon snack. So…I certainly feel like I have earned the worst mom award, tonight! As I am writing this, I have tears in my eyes, because I feel so bad. Did my husband and I make the right choice? Is our choice of disciplining the right approach for his age, his personality? Does he understand the consequences for his bad behavior? My husband is usually a lot more strict with rules (and was quick to enforce tonight’s actions), but Keenan doesn’t seem to push his luck with us. Keenan is usually a sweet and happy child, so I don’t know why he has been acting this way. I’m not sure if it is related to him being sick over the weekend and he still doesn’t feel 100%, or if it is the lack of sleep from not having a nap yesterday afternoon (and waking up early this morning) or his teeth (second year molars coming in?). Ugh…I just want to wake up and start this day all over again.

On a more positive note, the competition was a lot of fun this weekend. Even though we had two workouts in pouring rain, it was a blast! There were four WODs, two indoors and two outdoors. Since there wasn’t that much room in the box, everyone had to camp outside. Since my husband didn’t come, I forgot our tent/canopy or anything to keep us warm. It was a cold day! We did really well and took fourth place overall (almost third, if it wasn’t for a few missed reps from a questionable judge). It was the first time the four of us worked together, and we made a great team, supporting one another and communicating well. I can’t wait to do another team competition!

Yesterday was a nice recovery day. My husband made us a delicious spinach frittata with pumpkin pie lattes (topped with the last bit of his homemade whipped cream!). In the afternoon, we headed to Nevada City, which was a lot of fun (though very rainy!). We enjoyed some hot cocoa, Kettle Corn, carolers, seeing Santa and walking around and looking at all of the vendor booths. Keenan enjoyed listening to all of the musicians play and waiting for his “Rudolph balloon” that came undone after five minutes of being in the car on our way home!

Such a great post competition breakfast!

A nice treat in our new big mugs, thanks to a bargain at Marshalls!

This morning, “Peanut” was found on the couch reading one of Keenan’s books, “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Surprisingly, Keenan wasn’t too irritated. He just wanted to read the book himself!

Reading!

Reading!

Yesterday morning, she was playing with Keenan’s fire truck and Lego man, which Keenan was actually okay with, though he kept saying. “Mommy, get my man!”

Enjoying Keenan's favorite toys!

For breakfast this morning (before the day turned south), we all three enjoyed “piggy” pancakes from Grandma. My in-laws gave Keenan an early Christmas gift, since we leave Wednesday for Montreal. In the gift was a pancake maker in the shape of a pig, as well as some multigrain pancake mix from Trader Joe’s and two little spatulas for Keenan’s kitchen.

One little piggy for breakfast!

One little piggy for breakfast!

Since we are leaving very early Wednesday morning, it is time to start packing and wrapping gifts! We are doing a little early-Christmas with Keenan after he wakes up from his nap, tomorrow, so we don’t have to cart his gifts with us, and nothing is wrapped!

Questions: As a parent, how do you know if you are doing the right thing? How do you not feel bad for disciplining your child? Does it ever get easier? My husband and I are pretty consistent with our disciplining approach, but if it is not working, what is the next step? If the behavior is due to Keenan not feeling well, do we still enforce the same rules?

Welcome to My New Site!

By Melissa · Comments (7) ·: December 15th, 2012

Happy Friday! Welcome to my new site! I’m super-excited to share it with all of you, though please bear with me, as I am slowly learning everything and ironing out any kinks. If you want to continue following my blog via email, make sure to enter your email address here or at the link on the right hand side of my blog. You can still easily connect through Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and now, Instagram!

I’m glad it is Friday, but not looking forward to tomorrow’s team competition. Keenan developed a fever (102 degrees!) yesterday afternoon, and still had it, today. Poor little guy, he has been lethargic and just wanting to cuddle and be held since yesterday. We saw the doctor, today, and he said he has a little virus, so just keep giving him Children’s Tylenol or Motrin and plenty of fluids until he is better. This is the first time he has had a fever, so it has been hard. I hate seeing him feel so bad. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make him feel better! Now I know how my mom felt when me or my brothers were sick! Anyhow, with him being sick, I’m not motivated to go to my competition. In addition, I’m finally not feeling sore from last Saturday! I feel bad not being there for Keenan tomorrow, even though my husband is staying home with him. Ugh… that mommy guilt! I know that once I get to the competition, I’ll have fun and be glad that I’m there, but it will be hard to leave Keenan in the morning!

I’m hoping Keenan feels better by Sunday, because we are planning to go to Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas, an annual tradition in my husband’s family that we have been doing since we got married. It is a wonderful holiday event that puts you in the Christmas spirit! There are carolers, musical events, Santa, carriage rides, many unique vendors, arts and crafts, great food and of course, all of the stores are open that provide goodies and hot cocoa or hot cider. We look forward to going every year, so I hope Keenan is up for it!

Oh, before I forget, “Peanut” was found in our coffee table’s centerpiece today, playing with the potpourri! Even though Keenan wasn’t feeling well, he was still excited to come downstairs and find her, as well as being relieved she wasn’t playing with his toys!

Sitting on the potpourri!

Sitting on the potpourri!

Since this week was rather crazy with transferring servers, moving to my new blog, and Keenan getting sick, “Friday Favorites” will have to wait for another week. Sorry about that!

On another more tragic note, my heart goes out to all of the families that were affected in Newtown, Connecticut today. It is awful, and I can’t imagine what they are going through right now. I don’t understand how people can be so cruel and cause harm to one another for no reason, especially innocent children. I hugged my little guy tighter and gave him a few extra kisses before he went to bed, tonight. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every family with an empty chair at their table. Just as important, we need to remember the teachers and first-responders that did everything they could to protect the children.  Another reminder to always tell your loved ones how much you care about them!

Well, it is time for bed, since I have to be up bright and early for the competition, tomorrow! Have a great weekend!

Questions: What do you like to do for your children when they are sick? Do you have any special remedies that you make when your kids are sick? When my brothers and I were sick, my mom used to make her chicken veggie soup, as well as give us toast with sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top. It made everything feel so much better, not to mention watching episodes of “I Love Lucy!”

Around the Plate 12 Day Healthy Holiday Challenge and a New Slow-Cooker Recipe!

By Melissa · Comments (8) ·: December 11th, 2012

Peanut decided to find a comfy spot on the stairwell this morning! Keenan immediately found her as we were walking down the stairs. He usually holds onto the rail as he walks down the stairs and when he saw Peanut, he immediately took his hand off, to make sure he wouldn’t touch her! It was too funny!

Happily siting on the stairwell!

Happily siting on the stairwell!

Before I share my new slow-cooker recipe, I’m excited to be featured as a guest blogger on Around the Plate for their 12 Day Healthy Holiday Challenge series. Around the plate is a wonderful online community that brings together nutrition experts and interested individuals to improve the way the world eats one plat at a time. I had the privilege to write a post for Day 7 of their challenge: Holiday Activities to Keep You Moving and Burning Calories. It was a fun article to write, since I love doing all of the various holiday activities that usually aren’t around the rest of the year. As an added bonus, most of the activities provide great exercise! Please take a moment to check out my post and share it with your friends and family members! Thanks!!

12 Day Healthy Holiday Challenge

Now, on to my new slow-cooker recipe that I made for tonight’s dinner! It smells SO good; I can’t wait to eat it!

Slow-Cooker Sweet and Spicy Pork Chops: (serves 2)

Ingredients:

- 2 frozen pork chops

- 1/4 low sodium soy sauce

- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

- 1/2 cup ketchup

- 2 tsp honey

- 2 small cloves garlic (minced)

- 1/2 tsp pepper

-1/4 tsp garlic powder

- 1/2 tsp garlic no-salt seasoning

- 1/4 cup chicken broth

Directions:

1. Mix all ingredients together, except for pork chops.

2. Place pork chops in your crock pot and pour sauce on top, making sure to completely cover the pork.

3. Cook on high for 4 hours (if you use thawed pork, change as you need). Enjoy!

*Notes: I updated the recipe with 1/4 cup chicken broth and cooking for only 4 hours, because our pork chops were a little too dry, but the flavor was excellent!

Smells SO good!

Should be yummy!

This week is busy (to say the least!) in getting things done before we leave for Montreal next week to spend the holidays with my brother and his family, so I’m keeping today’s post short and sweet to finish up some projects. Have a great rest of your afternoon!

Questions: What holiday activities do you enjoy doing? What is your favorite slow-cooker recipe? I love looking at Christmas lights, going to Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas and of course, snow skiing and tubing (though, those can be done at other times during the year!).

REMINDER: There is still time to win a box of the BEST popcorn EVER!! Angie’s Popcorn giveaway ends tonight at 8 p.m. PST!! Click here to enter!
